What is Depression?
Depression is a state of mind when you feel sad, anxious and mentally ill. You become inefficient and lose interest to do any kind of work and activities. Tend to dislike everything and always likely to stay lonely. Depression is a common but serious mental health issue.
Symptoms of depression:
- Lack of energy
- Low self-esteem
- Self-harm
- Trouble of Concentrating
- Mood Swing
- Lack of Emotion
- Sleeping too much less or more
- Lack of Concentration.
Myth vs Facts
In Bangladesh, we have a whole lot of myths about Depression.
Let me share you a fact that 16.8% of Bangladeshi Adults suffer from mental health-related problems. Among them 16.8% are Male and 17% are Female. It is also shocking among them 92.3% do not seek medical attention.
In our country, it is normal to have organ-related issues or diseases but it is considered taboo to have mental health-related problems. As if the brain is not part of the Human Body.
Common Myths present in our country:
1. A depressed person can find his/her own solution.
2. Depression considered a sign of personal weakness and disgrace.
3. Talking about depression openly makes things worse.
4. Antidepressant medicine or drug always cure depression.
5. Depression occurs due to sad situations of life.
6. Depression is a lifelong punishment.
7. Depression is a phase, it will pass soon.
Facts against those myths:
1. In most cases, people need their parents, sibling, friends and closed ones.
2. Even the toughest person we know may have depression.
3. Talking and someone's support may be the first step towards healing depression.
4. Only medicine and drugs cannot cure depression.
5. Depression may occur due to many aspects of life. Sadness is an emotion and depression is the illness.
6. Depression can be treated and the recovery is possible.
7. Depression can sustain for a long time that is even years.
